“I see a day when the community will grow enough that it will need a 100-bed hospital. When that time comes, we will build a hospital in Smyrna.” – Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr.

In 1987, HCA closed the doors at Smyrna Hospital, but with the promise that they would one day build a facility to meet the needs of the growing community. In 1988, HCA opened Southern Hills Medical Center at Smyrna, a stand-alone emergency department. For more than 10 years, this six-bed emergency department witnessed the growth taking place in Rutherford County. With more than 18,000 visits each year, the small emergency department served as evidence that the communities of Middle Tennessee needed a full service hospital.

In 2003, Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr.’s commitment was fulfilled when TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center opened just off interstate 24 at the Sam Ridley exit in Smyrna. The hospital is located less than eight miles from the interstate 840 loop, making it easily accessible to residents of nearby Williamson and Wilson counties.

The hospital opened with 75 beds and expanded to 101 beds four years later as community needs continued to grow. Additional expansion initiatives included the establishment of the Center for Sleep Medicine and the radiation oncology program at The Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at TriStar StoneCrest. Since its opening, TriStar StoneCrest has achieved a strong record of success, including the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® in the nation award.
